Catucai 785 from Espirito Santo presents quite the anomaly of a profile among Brazilian coffees. We have long appreciated this variety, and feel it deserves recognition and appreciation in the industry. Catucai 785 is often very reminiscent of Kenyan coffees - red florals, red fruits, and tart acidities. We hope you get a chance to experience Edinea Sartori's competition-placing lot, and potentially a perspective-shifting experience as to what Brazilian coffees can be like.
We were connected to Edinea’s coffee through Osito, with whom we have purchased coffees from Espirito Santo before. Edinea and her husband Valentim Fioresi produce coffees together in a serene refuge, affectionately called Recanto Feliz. The property, located at an altitude of 930 meters, covers a total of 12 hectares, four of which are dedicated to coffee production. They manage the farm together and employ family members who live locally. Not too far from Recanto Feliz is Sertãozinho, a second property co-managed with Edineia's brother, covering 2 hectares at an altitude of 1,150 m.a.s.l and dedicated entirely to producing specialty coffees. It was with coffee from this property that the family won 2nd place in the Washed Arabica category of the Pio Corteletti Award, a quality competition held by Nater Coop in 2023. This season, Edinea’s Catucai 785 lot placed 7th in the same competition.
Catucai 785 was discovered by chance in the 1980's in Brazil's Zona de Mata. It was genetically confirmed to be a natural cross between Catuai and Icatu; a tradional Bourbon descendent. Contrary to low- altitude, chocolate-heavy and nutty coffees commonly found in Brazil, Catucai 785 became prized for it's starkly differing profiles of bright acidity, tart fruits and florals. It especially thrives in high altitude regions like Espirito Santo.
