Abel Salinas has historically produced one of our top five favorite Mejorados ever, dating back to 2023 when we first tried his coffee. Every year he is among the producers in Loja whose coffee we eagerly wait to have a chance to try. Though we have sought to work with Abel's coffee in past seasons, this is the first year we have had the opportunity to do so. Dare I say, this is our top Mejorado release of this Spring / Summer season.
The florality on this lot is quite pronounced, easily the most floral of any Mejorado we have released this season. It is always interesting for me to sense a unique florality in a coffee (especially Mejorado) that veers away from more common "white florals" or "jasmine." Abel's coffee is showing a really fun purple-hued floral like lilac or violet, in tandem with honeysuckle. These florals start to show prominently at the 2 week mark from roast, so we recommend allowing at least that much time to get the profile's full effect.
Abel's Mejorado has also always had a lovely presence of lemon - and with the dense sugars present in the cup, this lot is seemingly like a delightful, refreshing lemon custard. Finishing up the cup is the hallmark "brown candy sweetness" which is pointedly maple syrup for us. This coffee has been coming out on top when cupped against various other offerings on cupping tables. A real standout, and a wonderful opportunity to have this first season working with Abel's coffee.
